Kate Brown Ends Charade and Admits Favoring Proposed Tax Hike of Nearly $1 Billion

Wilsonville, OR – “No matter how many times the people of Oregon say NO to tax hikes, double talking Democrat governor Kate Brown’s true obsession with raising taxes on businesses won’t end,” stated Oregon GOP Chairman Bill Currier.

Despite saying just last week that the Democrats’ almost one billion dollar tax proposal was “not among her top priorities,” Brown is now taking credit for its momentum in the state house. PLACEHOLDER IMAGE

“Though it is hard to know which Kate Brown is now telling us what she really stands for, she has finally ended the charade of not supporting a massive business tax increase and has come out not only to admit that she favors it, but is also taking credit for being the political genius ensuring its passage in the legislature,” said Currier. “This is the Governor’s tax increase now.”

The Oregonian reports:

Gov. Kate Brown said less than a week ago that passing a $900 million corporate tax plan was not among her top priorities in the remaining weeks of the legislative session. But on Wednesday the governor changed course, saying the proposal has gained traction, thanks in part to her efforts.

The tax bill negotiated by House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, and Sen. Mark Hass, D-Beaverton, ‘was informed extensively by the work I did and my team did,’ Brown told reporters. The governor said her personal conversations with tech firm executives and chamber of commerce leaders helped build support for the bill.

Brown also said her call for lawmakers to focus on her priorities last week -- even though the corporate tax plan wasn't among them -- helped propel the plan forward.”

“Instead of empowering Oregon businesses to expand economic opportunity, Kate Brown continues to treat them like a piggy bank for tax dollars,” said Currier. “As Oregon continues to fall in state business rankings and decline economically, it becomes increasingly clear how desperately our state needs a change in leadership come 2018. It is time to ‘Rethink Kate Brown.’”
