Oregon GOP Challenges Portland Mayor to Clarify Which Crimes Illegal Aliens Get Sanctuary

Wilsonville, OR– Oregon Republican Party released a statement regarding the Portland Mayor’s response to Attorney General Sessions announcements today and the Mayor’s defense of Portland’s Criminal Illegal Alien Sanctuary Declaration last week.

Sessions-Wheeler-Currier-Sanctuary-Victims "We realize some have chosen to cherry pick and misconstrue the ORP statement this past Friday as applying to all immigrants, or even all illegal aliens, but it was aimed solely at the truly troubling blanket statement made by Mayor Wheeler on Friday," stated State Party Spokesman Kevin Hoar. One example is an article published tonight by Gordon Friedman in the Oregonian.

"In light of the Rockville Rape incident in the news, we pointed out that his broad sanctuary policy permits, even encourages, Portland to harbor criminal illegal aliens who commit serious felonies,” noted Hoar. “As AG Sessions pointed out today, Kate Steinle's illegal alien killer in San Francisco stated that he went there because he knew local authorities would prevent Federal ICE agents from deporting him, despite his crimes."

Here are some facts for Mayor Wheeler to consider: As a recent Rasmussen poll shows, Americans don’t want to live in communities that harbor criminal illegal aliens, much less have 30,000 of them released into their communities, like the Obama Administration did recently.

“Oregon and its cities must not become a magnet for such criminals. Does the Mayor know how many criminal illegal aliens are roaming freely in Portland today?,” added Oregon Republican Chairman Bill Currier. "We challenge Mayor Wheeler to state, with perfect clarity, which crimes illegal aliens get sanctuary for in Portland from ICE detention and deportation, and which don’t. Whichever sanctuary-enabled crimes he allows, he and the city must bear FULL liability to the future victims."

The Oregon Republican Party is the state’s arm of the Republican National Committee. It’s Chairman and officers are dedicated to preserving and advancing Republican principles within the state of Oregon and to improving the lives and livelihoods of Oregon’s working families through economic freedom and equal protection under the law.
