Oregon GOP Chair Strongly Supports New Temporary Restriction of Travel From 6 Hotbeds Vital to Prevent Terrorism in U.S., Repudiates Senator Merkley

Wilsonville, OR - Oregon Republican Party Chairman Bill Currier issued a statement tonight “strongly supporting” the revised Executive Order temporarily restricting entry into the U.S. by persons from six nations identified by both Congress and the Obama administration as having “heightened concerns” about terrorism, and which cannot or will not provide adequate screening information. The new order explicitly excludes green card holders, dual citizens, anyone already in the U.S., and any foreign national who has already obtained a valid visa prior to January 27th.

Tillerson-Sessions-Kelly-Presser "President Trump continues to keep his promise to do what is necessary to implement ‘extreme vetting’ to prevent terrorists from entering the U.S. from the world’s terror hotbeds," said Chair Currier. “The new order more fully explains the purpose of the order, clears up any misconceptions, and focuses implementation on what is urgently and absolutely necessary to protect our country.”

The Executive Order signed today is largely a clarification of the previous travel pause executive order issued on January 27th. Its implementation will begin 10 days from now, to facilitate an orderly rollout. The order, still derisively misrepresented as a “Muslim Ban” by Democrat politicians, jihadist apologist groups, and many in the liberal media, only affects a small fraction of people from the world’s 42 Muslim majority nations. Each of the 6 countries affected is one or more of the following:

  1. A state sponsor of terrorism
  2. Has been significantly compromised by terrorist organizations
  3. Contains active terrorist conflict zones

“The President isn’t banning Muslims, he is doing what is necessary to successfully ban terrorists. By temporarily restricting travel from just a handful of countries in order to have time to put in place measures to filter out people who are coming to the U.S. to kill Americans, he is ensuring the safety of Americans of all faiths and all backgrounds - something a strong majority of Americans support,” added Currier.

Oregon’s Democrat Senator Merkley wasted no time issuing a statement misrepresenting and condemning the new Executive Order, saying that “just like the old ban, the new ban makes our country less safe” because it is “giving ISIS propaganda” while solving a problem Merkley claims “doesn’t exist.”

“Sen. Merkley's statement shows that he still doesn’t understand that ISIS is intent on infiltrating our country and killing Americans. They don’t need ‘propaganda’ to be motivated to do so.. This is the kind of silly and dangerous assertion that led President Obama to call ISIS the ‘JV team’ and resulted in ISIS expanding into the terror machine it is today,” responded Currier. “Sen. Merkley apparently didn't get the memo that we live in a new era in which terrorists are openly promising to pose as harmless visitors or refugees in order to enter the U.S. and slaughter innocent civilians, just like they have done in Europe. Shockingly, Sen. Merkley and many Democrat leaders see no problem with continuing to risk the importation of terrorism rather than prioritizing the safety of our citizens.”

9th Circuit and Terrorists Nuisance legal challenges are still expected and no one can be sure when and how the Federal District Court in Seattle or frequently-overturned 9th Circuit Court will weigh in, but the new Executive Order was crafted with more precise language that removes most, if not all, of the elements the court cited when it blocked the earlier Executive Order.

"The revised Executive Order addresses nearly all the issues critics have raised about the original order. It is well past time that we have proper vetting for travelers from these six countries, as the President promised and has the indisputable authority under the Constitution and from Congress to implement," added Currier. "This time the courts would be wise to remember the clear legal authority the President has under 8 U.S. Code § 1182 (f) Suspension of entry or imposition of restrictions by President."

“There really is no time to waste when keeping the American people safe from terrorists groups like ISIS. Must we wait to take these steps until after terrorists successfully exploit our entry screening and commit mass murder, as they have so plainly said they will do?”
