President Offers Democrats Sensible Compromise to Secure Border and Open Gov't

Wilsonville, OR – Today, the Oregon Republican Party released this statement following President Trump's announcement at the White House of an offer to secure our nation's southern border, end the humanitarian crisis, and reopen the government.

PLACEHOLDER IMAGE “This afternoon President Trump offered a straight forward, common sense, and fair compromise to end the partial government shutdown.  It offers protection to DACA and Temporary Protected Status immigrants, while making a down payment on securing our southern border against the crime, drugs, and gangs flowing in and harming Americans,” stated Oregon Republican Chairman Bill Currier.  "The President has extended a real olive branch to Democrats who have so far refused to do anything about the crisis at our border or even talk with the President."

The President's proposal includes: $800 million in humanitarian relief aid, $805 million in improved drug detection technology at border points of entry, 2,750 more border agents, 75 new immigration judicial teams to tackle the 900 thousand backlogged cases, and $5.7 Billion for secure steel slat fencing along the high priority, wide open 234 miles of the border which is only 10% of the 2000+ mile southern border. As a compromise, he proposes three years of protection to 700 thousand DACA recipients and 300 thousand Temporary Protected Status immigrants, which should give Congress time to enact longer-term solutions.

“As we've pointed out before, the experts at the Department of Homeland Security and the Border Patrol say where walls have been erected along the southern border it has reduced illegal crossings by 90 PERCENT,” added Chairman Currier. “It is time for Democrat leaders to put aside the shouts and threats of the ‘open border, soft-on-crime’ radicals in their party and start listening to the Border Patrol officers and giving them what they are asking for to do their jobs. They also should listen to the Angel Moms, Dads, Husbands, and Wives who have tragically lost sons, daughters, and spouses to the scourge of illegal criminals running wild in our country.”

“In 2006, 2014, and even just last year in 2017, Democrats voted to fund secure border barriers like the ones we already have that are working,” noted Currier. “All President Trump is trying to do is finish this vital work, end the immediate and dangerous crisis at our southern border, keep 330 million Americans safe, and restore respect for our laws and points of entry once again. That is good for everyone - Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.”

“Our President is bending over backward to offer a compromise to Congressional Democrat leaders to end the current stalemate. It is time Democrat leaders step up and show they are more interested in solving our border problems and protecting Americans than they are in playing 2020 politics and pandering to the extreme far left. If they won't do so, then the American people will figure out quickly that Democrats are the ones saying ‘no deal’ and refusing to address the real problems that citizens across our nation are facing."
