GOP Welcomes Gov't Ethics Commission Decision on Complaints against Kitzhaber-Hayes

Wilsonville, OR - The Oregon Republican Party issued the following statement from Chairman Bill Currier regarding the Oregon Government Ethics Commission’s decision today to proceed with the 2014 ethics complaints by Republicans against then Governor John Kitzhaber and his lobbyist girlfriend, Cylvia Hayes.

Kitzhaber and Kate
Consideration of the complaints filed in 2014 was put on hold in February 2015 when state and federal criminal investigations into Kitzhaber and Hayes were launched.  That same month, Ex-Governor Kitzhaber resigned from office in disgrace after having been exposed, according to media reports by a whistleblower, for attempting to have relevant email evidence deleted from state data systems.  The federal and state investigations were discontinued without charges being filed as of June 2017, leading to a reconsideration of the original ethics complaints by the Oregon Government Ethics Commission today.

“After three years, it is welcome news that the Oregon Government Ethics Commission will finally proceed with investigating some of the most severe ethical breaches by a high public official in Oregon history. Perhaps it is the beginning of the long overdue exposing and rooting out of corruption in our state government, and finally holding accountable those who engage in it,” stated Oregon GOP Chairman Bill Currier.

"We certainly wish that Governor Kate Brown had earnestly followed through on her promises in 2015 to do the same, but today we still have the same system of cronyism and cover-up in place that she claimed she would address, except now she is the political beneficiary of it,” said Currier.

Current Governor Kate Brown automatically succeeded Kitzhaber to office vowing to “work across party lines to restore the public’s trust.” However, her hyper-partisan tenure has been rife with campaign pay-to-play and government procurement cronyism scandals, unabated by her minor and often symbolic attempts at reform.

“Oregonians have had enough and will vote in the 2018 election to bring about the much-needed ethical reforms necessary to restore public faith in the integrity of our state government and put the “Dirty Government” of Oregon's longtime ruling elite behind us," added Currier.

The Oregon Republican Party is the state’s arm of the Republican National Committee. It’s Chairman and officers are dedicated to preserving and advancing Republican principles within the state of Oregon and to improving the lives and livelihoods of Oregon’s working families through economic freedom and equal protection under the law.
